How to use a teleprompter on an iPhone

Most iPhone teleprompter use is one of two jobs: reading to the iPhone's own camera for a Short, a Reel or a TikTok, or using the iPhone as the script screen beside a bigger camera. Either way the rule is the same. The words go as close to the lens as you can put them, so your eyes stay on the camera. Hold the phone at eye level, or put it on a small tripod an arm's length away with the lens level with your eyes; a phone held low makes you look down at the viewer.

The teleprompter above runs in Safari. Paste the script, set a speed in words a minute, and tap Start: after a 3-2-1 the text rises past two small arrows, and you read the line between them. On a phone the text starts at a size that fits the screen; make it bigger or smaller while it scrolls. It asks the iPhone to keep the screen awake while it scrolls.

Short videos run on short scripts: at 150 words a minute, 60 seconds is about 150 words. Time your script before you film, and see how TikTok and Shorts scripts are built to hold attention for a minute.

A set speed, or your voice?

A set speed is fine for a 30-second read. For anything longer, the script and your voice drift apart: you pause for a beat, and it doesn't.

Scriptfox's own teleprompter follows your voice, in Safari on the same iPhone: it listens as you read, holds when you stop and catches up when you skip ahead. A free account includes 30 voice minutes a month, and the script you paste here comes with you. Safari asks for the microphone once; allow the microphone on an iPhone if you tapped no.

Record with the script over the camera

This page only scrolls. To film yourself on the iPhone itself, with the script over the camera, use the Scriptfox app for iPhone. It is a free download on the App Store, signs in to the same account, and floats your script over the front camera while it follows your voice. Press record and the video goes to your photos in a Scriptfox album, with no script in it. Nothing is uploaded.

The free plan records in 1080p. The app's Overlay sheet sets the script's size, width, transparency, text size and reading line, and Mirror text flips it for a glass rig. The iPhone app stays in portrait. On Android? The Scriptfox app for Android is on Google Play.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free teleprompter for iPhone?

Yes, this one: it runs in Safari with no app, no account and no limit. The Scriptfox app is a free download too, and its free plan follows your voice for 30 minutes a month.

Can I record myself while reading?

Not on this page, which only scrolls. The Scriptfox app records with the front camera while your script sits over it, and saves the video to your photos.

Will the screen turn off while I read?

The teleprompter asks the iPhone to keep the screen awake while it scrolls. If yours still dims, raise Auto-Lock in Settings, under Display & Brightness, for the take.

Can I paste a script from Notes or Google Docs?

Yes. Copy it there and paste it into the box above. A line that starts with ## shows as a title and [words in brackets] as notes you see but don't read; everything else is read. The script stays in this browser on your iPhone.

Can I use my iPhone as the teleprompter for a bigger camera?

Yes. Mount it right under or beside the lens of the camera you film with, at the height of your eyes, or lay it under the glass of a small rig with "Mirror the text" ticked. Start the camera first, then the teleprompter.

Which way should I hold the phone?

Upright, with the camera at the top: the reading line sits a third of the way down the screen, close to the lens.

Can it follow my voice?

Not this free page: it never turns on the microphone. A free Scriptfox account follows your voice in Safari or in the app, with 30 voice minutes a month. Unlimited voice following is the Prompter plan at $79 a year.

Does it work on Android?

Yes. The free teleprompter runs in Chrome on Android, and the Scriptfox app is on Google Play.

Now let it follow you.

The same teleprompter, listening as you read. Free to try, no card required.
