Free teleprompter

Paste your script, press Start, and read. It scrolls at your speed, full screen, right here in your browser. Nothing to download, nothing to sign up for.

Reading time
0:000 words

At 130 words a minute. Titles and notes aren't counted.

130 words a minute

Change it while you read, too: the − and + buttons, or the − and = keys.

Paste a script, or try the sample, to start.

Want it to follow your voice instead?

Save this script to a free account: Scriptfox scrolls as you speak and waits when you pause. No card.

Your script stays in this browser. Nothing is uploaded unless you save it.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Paste your script

Or try the sample. A line starting with ## is a title and [words in brackets] are notes: both show, neither is read.

  2. 2

    Set the speed

130 words a minute is a calm start. The reading time updates as you move it.

  3. 3

    Press Start and read

After a 3-2-1 the text rises past the two small arrows. Read the line between them. Tap or press Space to pause.

On your device

It runs the same in every modern browser. For what to tap or press, where to put the window, and what Scriptfox adds on each one, see the guide for your device:

A set speed, or your voice?

This page is a traditional teleprompter: the text moves at the speed you choose, and you keep up with it. That works well once the speed is right, and it is how most studio prompters ran for decades, with someone at the controls matching the reader.

The catch is that you are now matching the text. Pause for a laugh, slow down for an important line or ad-lib a sentence, and the script carries on without you. Scriptfox replaces the person at the controls: it listens as you read and keeps the next line where your eyes are, so you can pause, go off script and come back. A free account includes 30 voice minutes a month, and the script you paste here comes with you.

Reading from a teleprompter without looking like it

Put the words next to the lens. The closer the text sits to the camera, the less your eyes travel. On a laptop, make the window narrow and put it right under the webcam; on a phone, read from the top of the screen.

Read from the arrows, not the bottom. The reading line sits a third of the way down so the next words are already in view below it. Let your eyes rest there and the text comes to you.

Find the speed in the first paragraph. Start a little slow, then press + until you stop waiting for the words. If you catch yourself rushing, it is too fast.

Write the breaths in. A [pause] or [smile] in brackets shows on the prompter as a quiet note and is not counted in the time. A ## title marks where each part begins.

Time it before you film. The script timer tells you how long the script runs and can fit it to 60 seconds or any length.

Frequently asked questions

Is this teleprompter really free?

Yes, with no limit and no account. It scrolls at the speed you set for as long as you like. Scriptfox is paid for by the version that follows your voice, and that has a free plan as well.

Do I need to sign up or download anything?

No. It runs in your browser on a computer, a tablet or a phone: paste the script and press Start. An account is only for saving scripts or having the prompter follow your voice.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. The text fills the screen, a tap pauses it, and dragging moves it back or on. The screen stays awake while it scrolls in browsers that allow it. Put the phone as close to the camera lens as you can, so your eyes stay near it.

Can I mirror the text for a glass teleprompter?

Yes. Tick "Mirror the text" before you start, or press M while it runs. The text flips left to right, so it reads the right way round in the glass of a teleprompter rig.

How fast should a teleprompter scroll?

Start near 130 words a minute and adjust as you read. Most people talk at about 150 on camera; a deliberate read is closer to 125, an excited one 175 and up. The speed changes the moment you press − or +, so the right pace usually takes one paragraph to find.

Where does my script go?

Nowhere. It stays in your browser, kept on this device so it is still here next time, and nothing is sent to Scriptfox. It only leaves if you press Save and create an account, where it becomes your first script.

Can it follow my voice instead of a set speed?

Not on this page: it never turns on your microphone. That is what Scriptfox does with a free account. It listens as you read, holds when you pause or ad-lib, and catches up when you skip ahead. The free plan includes 30 voice minutes a month.

Can I use a keyboard or a presentation clicker?

Yes. Space plays and pauses, the up and down arrows nudge the text, and − and = change the speed. A presentation clicker works too: forward and back nudge the text, and its play button pauses.
