Teleprompter for Windows PC and laptop
Paste your script and read it on your PC or laptop, in Edge or Chrome. It scrolls at the speed you set, full screen or in a narrow window under your webcam. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for.
At 130 words a minute. Titles and notes aren't counted.
Change it while you read, too: the − and + buttons, or the − and = keys.
Paste a script, or try the sample, to start.
Save this script to a free account: Scriptfox scrolls as you speak and waits when you pause. No card.
Your script stays in this browser. Nothing is uploaded unless you save it.
On your PC
- 1
Open it in Edge or Chrome
Windows comes with Edge, and it runs the teleprompter as it is. Chrome and Firefox do too. Nothing installs.
- 2
Put the words under the webcam
On a laptop the camera is in the middle of the top edge. Read full screen (press F), or make the window narrow and snap it up under the lens.
- 3
Drive it from the keyboard
Space pauses, − and = change the speed, the up and down arrows nudge the text. A presentation clicker works the same way.
How to use a teleprompter on a PC or laptop
A teleprompter on a PC is a window that scrolls your script while you look at the camera. The one above runs in your browser: paste the script, set a speed in words a minute, press Start, and after a 3-2-1 the text rises past two small arrows. Read the line between them, and if the pace or the size feels wrong, change it while the text moves.
On a laptop the webcam sits in the middle of the top edge, so put the words as close under it as you can. Full screen is the easiest to read; a narrow window at the top of the screen keeps your eyes nearest the lens. On a desktop PC with a webcam on the monitor the rule is the same: the text goes right under the camera, not on a second screen off to the side.
Long script? Time your script first and fit it to the length you want, then read it here. On a MacBook instead? The teleprompter for Mac covers Safari and Chrome.
A set speed, or your voice?
This page is a traditional teleprompter: it moves at your speed and you keep up. Once the speed is right that works, but pause for a laugh or add a sentence of your own and it carries on without you.
Scriptfox's own teleprompter follows your voice instead. It scrolls as you read, holds when you stop and catches up when you skip ahead, in Edge or Chrome. A free account includes 30 voice minutes a month and keeps the script you paste here. If the browser never asked for the microphone, here is how to allow the microphone in Chrome and Edge.
The Scriptfox app for Windows
Windows is where Scriptfox has a desktop app, for Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit). It is the same teleprompter plus what a browser can't do: an overlay that floats over every other app and can let your clicks pass through to the window behind it, global hotkeys that pause or nudge the script while another app has the keyboard, a screen recorder, and the Studio video editor. The overlay is left out of screen recordings by default.
The app is a free download for any Scriptfox account; Call Mode, the overlay over your calls, and the Studio editor are part of Pro at $19 a month. Sign in, open the account menu and choose Desktop app. Windows may warn you the first time because the installer isn't code-signed yet, and the help answer on how to get the Windows desktop app has the steps. In the browser, Chrome and Edge have a lighter version: the floating window that stays on top of other apps.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to download a teleprompter for Windows?
No. The free teleprompter on this page runs in Edge or Chrome on Windows 10 or 11, with no download and no account. Scriptfox's desktop app is optional: it adds an overlay that floats over other apps, global hotkeys, a screen recorder and the Studio editor.
Does it work on a laptop?
Yes, on any Windows laptop, a Chromebook or a MacBook. Put the text just under the webcam at the top of the screen so your eyes stay near the lens.
Can I read over Zoom or Teams on my PC?
Yes. Keep the teleprompter in a narrow window under the webcam, beside the call. With a free Scriptfox account, Chrome and Edge can float the script on top of the call; the Windows app's overlay goes further and can let your clicks pass through it.
Can I use a presentation clicker?
Yes. Forward and back nudge the text and the clicker's play button pauses it. In the Windows app, global hotkeys reach the script even while a call or another app has the keyboard.
Can it follow my voice instead?
Not this free page: it never turns on the microphone. A free Scriptfox account does, in Edge, Chrome or the Windows app, with 30 voice minutes a month. Unlimited is the Prompter plan at $79 a year or Pro at $19 a month.
